Description

The brand identity project for the MUNCH museum, spearheaded by the Oslo City Council, is a masterclass in institutional design that masterfully bridges the gap between classical expressionism and contemporary visual culture. Executed with precise graphic design expertise by North, the project establishes a cohesive aesthetic language that balances functional clarity with bold artistic intervention. The identity leans heavily into a high-contrast palette of vibrant orange-red against stark black, creating a signature look that feels both urgent and timeless. This visual strategy is applied across a diverse range of touchpoints, from UI illustrations for digital membership passes and modular 3D render/CGI product designs for merchandise, to complex environmental signage. The typography, a geometric sans-serif, serves as the backbone of the system, whether it is subtly integrated into historical oil paint masterpieces or dominating large-scale exhibition posters. By maintaining a strict grid-based structure, the work ensures that even the most dynamic typographic treatments remain legible and professional. This project succeeds by treating the museum not merely as a repository for historical art, but as a living, modern brand that is accessible, structural, and architecturally striking. It is a rigorous exercise in corporate identity that feels inherently tied to the museum's urban presence, transforming public interaction through a consistent, sharp, and highly disciplined graphic system.
