De Utrechtse Boekenbar · Brand Identity

The brand identity for De Utrechtse Boekenbar masterfully bridges the gap between traditional retail and contemporary design, resulting in a cohesive visual language that feels both intimate and inherently modern. Under the expert graphic design of Daan Rietbergen, the identity centers on a rigorous, structured approach to typography that prioritizes legibility while maintaining a playful, rhythmic quality. By employing a restricted primary color palette of vibrant red, bold blue, and striking orange, the branding leans into a sharp, graphic aesthetic that transforms functional stationery—such as bookmarks, business cards, and gift vouchers—into tactile, collectible pieces. These print assets are defined by their clean sans-serif typefaces and high-contrast layouts, effectively capturing a sense of movement through alternating orientations. Beyond the print materials, the project extends this minimalist sensibility into the physical storefront, where natural light and hard light techniques accentuate the shop’s architecture, casting dramatic shadows that emphasize the matte texture of the collateral. The overall execution avoids unnecessary clutter, opting instead for a deliberate, balanced composition that reflects the bookstore’s multifaceted role as a hub for coffee, events, and literature. This synthesis of modern design principles and community-focused atmosphere cements De Utrechtse Boekenbar as a destination where thoughtful brand identity serves as the foundation for an inviting and enduring customer experience.
