10 Magazine Japan · Gu Haizhu

In a masterclass of visual storytelling for 10 Magazine Japan, this fashion editorial featuring model Haizhu Gu navigates the intersection of avant-garde minimalism and dramatic character study. Captured through the lens of photographer Victor Demarchelier, the series leans into a refined low-key and chiaroscuro aesthetic, where light is treated as a physical material to define the silhouette of the garments. With fashion styling by Aurora Sansone and Saori Masuda, the project breathes life into diverse textures, ranging from smooth, structured leather to layered, intricate applique work. The deliberate use of dramatic studio strobe and natural light creates a moody, cinematic atmosphere that centers the subject within a stark, dark-textured environment. Tiina Roivainen’s bold makeup choices, particularly the vibrant magenta accents, act as a sharp visual anchor against the monochromatic and earth-toned palettes. Meanwhile, Romina Manenti’s hair styling adds a contemporary edge to the high-fashion editorial narrative. By prioritizing composition and shadow play, the creative team transforms each portrait into a tactile experience, balancing the austerity of the clothing with the expressive presence of the model. The resulting imagery is both composed and enigmatic, reinforcing the publication's reputation for elevated, thoughtful fashion documentation that prioritizes the interplay between light, shadow, and the sophisticated geometry of modern design.
