The Last Laugh

Sep 2026
i-D Magazine presents The Last Laugh, a fashion editorial project that channels a surreal, avant-garde aesthetic through experimental portraiture. The series leans into theatrical styling and sculptural effects, often utilizing sheer nylon distortions to reframe the human form against neutral studio backdrops. The work explores themes of playfulness and provocation, balancing conceptual set design with precise editorial photography. Photographer Charlie Engman leads the visual direction, collaborating with fashion editor and stylist Thom Bettridge to construct high-contrast, character-driven portraits. The production is supported by hair stylist Kabuto Okuzawa and makeup artist Mical Klip, who contribute to the distinct, stylized visuals, while set designer Maisie Lu provides the clean, architectural staging. The project utilizes natural light alongside professional studio lighting to achieve a clean and polished output.
