Heaven Issue

Apr 2026
For the Heaven Issue of 321 Magazine, photographer Kwabena Sekyi Appiah-nti and fashion editor Lily Zhang have collaborated on a visual narrative that elevates the standard editorial campaign into a study of form, geometry, and human texture. The project leans into a rigorous monochromatic palette, utilizing a mix of 35mm film, analogue photographic techniques, and stark high-key and low-key lighting to strip away the superfluous. Through a collection of intimate portraiture and abstract fine art studies, the imagery operates at the intersection of fashion and existential contemplation. The work captures subjects with a raw, cinematic intensity, while simultaneously exploring organic textures—from weathered wood and seashells to the dramatic, swirling vortex of a storm. By juxtaposing the human silhouette against architectural negative space and utilizing techniques such as chiaroscuro and macro photography, the team crafts a balanced, graphic rhythm that feels both timeless and grounded in contemporary editorial minimalism. The resulting visual dialogue emphasizes the interplay between light and dark, ultimately transforming the physical page into a tactile experience. By prioritizing composition and shadow over color, the Heaven Issue successfully moves beyond traditional media and entertainment aesthetics, presenting a clean, meditative visual environment that demands the viewer's undivided attention through its precise, minimalist execution.
