From Start to Finnish
Brand Identity

Mar 2020
For the performing arts showcase From Start to Finnish at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the brand identity project balances the raw, kinetic energy of physical theatre with a disciplined, high-end editorial sensibility. Developed by graphic designer Tino Nyman, the visual system operates on a rigorous grid, utilizing a stark monochrome palette that allows typography to function as the primary narrative device. The identity leans into a sophisticated tension between organic, amorphous shapes and the precise, architectural quality of serif and sans-serif typefaces. Throughout the collateral—ranging from dynamic event posters to curated stationery—the work employs heavy contrast and intentional negative space to ground the fleeting nature of live performance in a tangible, commercial context. Techniques such as long-exposure photography and sharp, directional lighting are integrated to elevate the promotional materials beyond standard infographics, lending each piece a cinematic and artistic depth. By pairing raw material textures, like stone fragments and concrete, with clean graphic layouts, the branding effectively communicates the collaborative and multifaceted essence of the festival. It is a masterclass in minimalist design, where the deliberate use of high-contrast visuals and structured typography creates a cohesive, professional aesthetic that captures the atmospheric spirit of the various dance, music, and theatre productions represented.
