In the striking series Handheld, photographer Maxime Poiblanc and stylist Malaika Crawford transform the traditional boundaries of jewellery and fashion photography through a compelling study of juxtaposition. By pairing high-end horology and fine adornments with utilitarian ephemera, the project creates a visual dialogue between luxury and the everyday. The creative vision, brought to life with set design by Selena Liu, places iconic timepieces and diamond-encrusted necklaces against backdrops of vintage calculators, office pencils, and mechanical music boxes. These compositions channel a distinct editorial minimalism, using studio strobe lighting to emphasize the cold, precise sheen of stainless steel and faceted stones against warm, matte surfaces like rust-toned felt and charcoal-grey paper. The project leverages macro photography techniques to capture the fine details of diamond settings and metallic links, elevating mundane objects into sculptural forms. Throughout the series, the interplay between the intricate mechanisms of luxury goods and the raw textures of industrial tools highlights a sophisticated sense of irony. Whether it is a Rolex entwined with a fabric tape measure or a brooch balanced on a cluster of lead pencils, Handheld serves as a masterclass in commercial still life, finding elegance in the unexpected intersection of classic craftsmanship and domestic ephemera, ultimately pushing the boundaries of traditional product representation within the fashion industry.
