Dazed Magazine: Māori Futures

Māori Futures is an expansive editorial project for Dazed Magazine that explores cultural identity through a blend of contemporary fashion and observational documentary photography. Shot by Erika Kamano, the series moves across diverse landscapes—from stark volcanic sand dunes to coastal meadows—to frame its subjects within both traditional and modern contexts. The project leans into a raw, cinematic aesthetic, often employing natural light to highlight textures ranging from traditional facial tattoos and woven cloaks to layered streetwear. Working with fashion editor and stylist Zara Mirkin and hair stylist Matt Benns, the team constructs a visual narrative that balances expressive, documentary-style portraiture with deliberate, clean-lined editorial composition. The result is a contemplative look at indigenous heritage and the future, captured with a grainy, analogue film sensibility that enhances its atmospheric mood.
