The Other Half

Apr 2026
In The Other Half, Whatevr Magazine leans into a raw and evocative exploration of identity, capturing the multifaceted nature of the self through an intimate editorial portrait series. This project, which falls firmly within the magazines, media, and entertainment landscape, eschews traditional artifice in favor of a tactile, deeply human narrative. Photographer Sofa Alvarez utilizes natural light to ground the images in an authentic, lived-in reality, where every texture—from dense, dark furs to intricate lace and delicate hair clippings—becomes a crucial storytelling element. Fashion editor and stylist Angel Macias curates a wardrobe that bridges the gap between the mundane and the surreal, exemplified by the playful inclusion of a toy frog perched against the subject’s hair or the stark, focused act of self-grooming. Featuring model Jiashan Liu, the series relies on a minimalist aesthetic to maintain a singular focus on the subject’s gaze and physicality. By balancing these textured, tactile elements with clean, off-white backgrounds, the editorial achieves a quiet intensity. The result is a compelling visual study that feels both private and performative, prioritizing raw human connection over polished perfection. Through this careful interplay of composition and light, Whatevr Magazine delivers a meditative look at modern life, successfully grounding its stylistic choices in a deeply personal and vulnerable context that resonates long after the initial glance.
