Surface Magazine
Brand Identity

Apr 2021
This brand identity project for Surface Magazine establishes a structured visual language defined by minimalist layout principles and precise grid alignment. The editorial design relies on high-contrast typography and intentional negative space to frame features on contemporary subjects, architectural objects, and modern furniture. The project features photography by Craig McDean, whose work provides a consistent aesthetic thread across portraiture and still-life documentation. The visual identity, executed with art direction by Scott Massey and graphic design by Javas Lehn Studio, uses a clean, monochrome-leaning palette to maintain a disciplined aesthetic across multiple spreads. Throughout the publication, the layout balances bold, sans-serif typography with high-contrast editorial composition. Technical touches, including analogue film captures and clean minimalist framing, ensure a cohesive look that centers on graphic precision and typographic clarity.
