For Max Serrano, beauty and authenticity go hand-in-hand. “I'm most inspired by the quirks of an individual’s style; unique expressions that aren’t based on trends or social agreements,” she says. “I love makeup that enhances the face rather than changes it.” Watching her work come to life – whether it’s a magazine editorial or an ad campaign – never fails to delight. “Seeing my work on film, TV and on the side of buses is always a highlight,” she says. “I enjoy pushing my creativity, but I still pushing boundaries while still understanding the aspects of makeup that make them feel the most beautiful. I like editorials that have a progression of makeup. Starting with one look and pushing its limits to create something unplanned by the end while celebrating each step along the way.” The energy I bring to set is (in three words)… pleasant, innovative and disposed. My muse is… mother nature is the ultimate muse with all her vivacious colours and textures. My favourite kind of brief is… I enjoy briefs that have clear guidelines on what the client expects but enough creative freedom to add ideas that push the brief to greater levels. My favourite location to shoot is… any location close to nature would be a favourite. They can be a logistical nightmare if there is no power but a favourite, nonetheless. The piece of kit that consistently saves the day on shoots is… a red-based brown pencil eyeliner and all the creamy products that add moisture and colour to the face. If I could shoot anyone living or dead it would be… Penelope Cruz, Marina Abramović, Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Erykah Badu or Zendaya If I had a signature scent it would be called… Aquatic. My favourite part of the job is… meeting interesting people that are passionate about their art. If I wasn’t working as a hair and make-up artist, I’d be… styling clothes.
