Bio
Matthew Porter (b. 1975, Pennsylvania) is a distinguished artist whose innovative approach to photography explores the intersection of history and culture. A graduate of Bard College, where he earned his BA in 1998, Porter further honed his craft at Bard-ICP, receiving his MFA in 2006. His work is characterized by a unique ability to weave together disparate historical events and cultural references, either within a single frame or across a series of meticulously curated photographs. For Porter, photographic film serves as a canvas, allowing him to layer light and form with precision. The transparency of the negative becomes a means of inscribing intricate patterns, resulting in compositions that challenge the traditional notion of photography as mere documentation. Instead, his process is one of elaboration, where each image emerges from a thoughtful interplay of elements, culminating in striking visual narratives. Porter's contributions to contemporary art have garnered significant attention, with features in prestigious publications such as The New York Times. His work is included in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Represented by M+B Gallery in Los Angeles and Invisible-Exports in New York, Porter's recent exhibitions showcase his evolving practice, including a solo show at Galerie Xippas in Paris and group exhibitions such as AutoPhoto at Foundation Cartier in Paris and A Matter of Memory at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY. In 2015, he published his first monograph, *Archipelago*, through Mack Books, further solidifying his position within the art world. Matthew Porter currently resides and works in Brooklyn, New York, where he continues to push the boundaries of photographic expression.
