Amiee Hershan knows hair. The esteemed stylist, who has worked with the likes of Rankin and Tyrone Lebon, never met a problem she couldn’t fix with a Maison brush, a hair elastic and a little Elnett hairspray. Onset, she’s as bastion of understated confidence – cool, calm and creative, with the chops to take even the most impossible briefs and overdeliver. “Sometimes I’m asked for something that won’t work and I’ve got to give a result that works while keeping within the brief,” she says. “Yes, I’ve been asked to stop the wind!” Translating a creative vision to hair and making it into a material reality is all in a day’s work for Amiee. “I’ve got confidence in when to rein it in, I don’t need to be on set fixing the hair after every take (unless it needs it) hair doesn’t need to be 72192938 hairstyles in one look,” she says. It’s that same confidence that has helped her develop a deep appreciation for leaving space spontaneity and magic to unfold onset. “I used to be so critical of my work, one hair out of place and I wouldn’t be able to look past it,” she says. “Let hair move, let it do its thing, let it look like hair. That’s where the beauty is for me. Hair has to move, sometime that one flyaway or wild hair moving in the wind can make an image.” My most memorable professional moment is… Old school shows in the tent outside the natural history museum with Eugene. The first ever Gareth Pugh is something I’ll never forget. My greatest source of creative inspiration is… I’m always inspired by old samurai and martial art movies, the hair is always incredible. The movie Hero is always on high rotation on my mood boards and inspiration. My favourite place to shoot is… in the studio, with the electricity (and catering). My energy in three words is… Fun, sweary, quirky with a hint of essential oils and crystals. My muse is… Alla Nazimova the silent movie star. That wild, wild hair, I’ve always wanted to do a Salome shoot, the wigs, everything is incredible. My signature scent would be called… Good Fucking Morning (if you know, you know) The prizes and awards I’ve won are… Not hair related, by my under 6 Oztag team got into the semis in their first year, I watched them grow every week and I’m super proud of them. My favourite part of the job is… Meeting the teams that become like family. If I wasn’t a hair artist I’d be… Teaching pilates to athletes.
