Varley Art Gallery of Markham
Brand Identity

Oct 2018
The brand identity project for the Varley Art Gallery of Markham, executed by Underline Studio, offers a masterful study in institutional design, balancing the complexities of fine art communication with a sharp, contemporary visual language. By moving away from traditional gallery motifs, the studio has crafted a cohesive system that thrives on bold typography and a distinctive geometric monogram that captures the institution's essence. The project functions as a masterclass in modular branding, utilizing a vibrant, primary-hued color palette of red, yellow, purple, and green that acts as a consistent thread across an expansive suite of collateral. Whether through the minimalist rigor of their sans-serif wordmark or the integration of intricate oil paint illustrations and abstract UI illustration techniques, the identity remains legible and sophisticated. Each piece, from seasonal brochures to exhibition invitations, benefits from an intentional, clean-lined layout that prioritizes professional clarity. The use of soft, even studio lighting in the presentation of these materials further highlights the high-quality matte paper stocks and precise graphic arrangements. This commercial and corporate identity project succeeds by treating every touchpoint—be it a business card or a program guide—as a canvas for a structured yet dynamic design philosophy that elevates the gallery's profile within the competitive landscape of digital media and cultural institutions.
