Chromatic Light

Feb 2026
Chromatic Light serves as an evocative masterclass in contemporary beauty editorial, capturing the intersection of skin texture and high-impact pigment. Through the lens of photographer Jae Eun Seok, this project pushes the boundaries of standard portraiture, leaning heavily into a graphic aesthetic that feels both deliberate and daring. The series centers on the transformative power of makeup artistry, with Tadatoshi Horikoshi crafting complex, multi-tonal eye designs that command attention against a minimalist, stark white backdrop. By utilizing studio strobe lighting to carve out sharp contours and deep shadows, the work creates a chiaroscuro effect that elevates simple beauty shots into high-fashion art. Model Brenda Mutoni provides a composed, striking canvas for these vibrant applications, where strokes of cyan, lilac, and burnt orange are rendered with clinical precision. Each portrait channels a clean, editorial minimalism, ensuring the viewer remains locked on the interplay between the dewy, natural skin finish and the bold, saturated cosmetic choices. The intentional use of low-key lighting and focused directional beams highlights not only the artistic technique behind the graphic eyeliner but also the nuanced individuality of the subjects themselves. This collection successfully reinterprets the potential of commercial beauty photography, favoring structural composition and vibrant color narratives over conventional glamour, resulting in a cohesive series that resonates with modern visual sophistication.
