An Outline of What Could Be

Dec 2025
In the striking series titled An Outline of What Could Be for Study Magazine, the interplay between structure and negative space redefines the conventions of contemporary fashion editorial. Through the lens of photographer Mark Kean, the project leans into a rigorous exploration of architectural silhouettes, where every garment—from voluminous bell-shaped dresses to sharp, double-breasted blazers—is treated as a sculptural element. The editorial aesthetic is anchored by a deliberate use of analogue film and 35mm film techniques, which lend a timeless, grainy texture to the monochromatic frames, effectively stripping away distraction to focus entirely on form and geometry. Styling by Camilla Nickerson emphasizes this minimalist vision, utilizing crisp whites and deep blacks to create a high-contrast visual language that is both cerebral and evocative. The subtle inclusion of metallic shimmery makeup by Thom Walker adds a contemporary edge to the otherwise clean compositions, while hair styling by Tom Wright highlights the model’s refined, cropped aesthetic. By maintaining a uniform grey backdrop across the series, the imagery achieves a sense of continuity that allows the intricate pleats and bold bow details to command attention. This project serves as a masterclass in editorial minimalism, proving that when the focus is sharpened to the barest essentials of light and shape, the resulting portrait work becomes a potent study of fashion as pure design.
