Fashion Becomes Art / Balenciaga x M ...

Mar 2026
In the striking Fashion Becomes Art series for Manifesto Magazine, the collaboration between photographer Matthieu Delbreuve and fashion editor Thea Lewis-Yates transforms the luxury fashion landscape into a masterclass of structural composition. The project functions as a bold exploration of form, where garments are treated as sculptural entities rather than mere apparel. By leveraging high-fashion aesthetics and an editorial portrait approach, the team crafts a visual language that balances the architectural rigidity of oversized blazers and leather opera gloves with the fluid, tactile nature of 3D floral appliqués and saturated, ruffled silhouettes. The execution relies on a sophisticated interplay of light, frequently utilizing natural light and low-key chiaroscuro techniques to emphasize the raw texture of fabrics and the precise geometric contours of each outfit. Set designer Frederick Asseo contributes to this tactile environment, utilizing crumpled canvas and mottled, painterly backdrops that ground the models in a grounded, artisanal space. With hair styling by Quentin Guyen and makeup by Ellen Walge, every detail serves the overarching creative vision of casting the human form as the centerpiece of contemporary art. Through a meticulous selection of garments and dynamic poses, the imagery channels a refined, editorial minimalism that elevates the luxury fashion industry, ensuring each portrait resonates with a deliberate, high-contrast intensity that feels both timeless and distinctly avant-garde.
