Tom Sloan
Bio
Tom's artistic journey began in the bustling industrial port city of Southampton, where he first discovered his passion for photography at the age of sixteen. It was during his early college years that he delved into the world of black and white photography, capturing the essence of his surroundings and the vibrant youth of his community. This formative experience laid the groundwork for a career deeply rooted in personal connection and authenticity. Tom pursued his BA Hons Degree in Photography at university, where his exceptional talent was recognized with a First-Class Honours Degree, as well as the prestigious Christopher-Son Degree Award for his compelling final project, "Journey Through Lithuania." This work not only showcased his technical skill but also his ability to weave narratives that resonate on a profound level. Central to Tom's practice is his unique ability to connect with a diverse range of subjects, including both 'real people' and models. This approach allows him to capture candid moments that reflect the authenticity of human experience. A recurring theme in his work is the vitality of youth. "I have always been fascinated by youth," he reflects. "There’s an exhilarating openness that comes with being young—an unfiltered excitement for life that breeds honest connections and confidence. I often seek out that playful spirit in the individuals I photograph, reminiscent of my own youthful desire for attention and acceptance." Tom's body of work is characterized by a cohesive aesthetic that binds each project, allowing for distinct narratives to unfold while maintaining a sense of continuity. Whether capturing spontaneous moments or orchestrating staged scenes, he strives for a palpable authenticity that invites viewers to engage with the stories he tells. Through his lens, Tom invites us to explore the beauty of youth and the intricate connections that define our shared human experience.
