Bio

Ryan Hopkinson is an innovative photographer and director whose work masterfully intertwines art, technology, nature, and scientific inquiry. His conceptual approach transcends traditional boundaries, offering a fresh perspective on visual storytelling. Whether crafting still images or dynamic motion projects, Ryan employs an unwavering commitment to creating each piece entirely in-camera, regardless of the scale or technical complexity involved. This meticulous methodology has not only honed his expertise in live-action manipulations and alternative material exploration but has also deepened his understanding of advanced technical camera techniques. Ryan’s artistic journey is marked by exciting collaborations with specialists from diverse fields. Notably, he partnered with visual artist Lucy Hardcastle to explore the materiality of glass and collaborated with the multi-disciplinary collective United Visual Artists on a series of short films for Nowness. These projects exemplify Ryan's belief that creativity knows no bounds, as he consistently seeks to elevate concepts beyond their conventional formats. Working with an array of materials and unique objects, Ryan often constructs large-scale sets designed solely for photographic or filmic representation, creating what he terms “temporary sculptures.” These ephemeral installations serve as the canvas for his innovative ideas, many of which find new life in exhibitions, installations, and captivating window displays. Ryan's distinctive vision has earned him prestigious accolades, including recognition at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the D&AD Awards, and the Young Guns ADC Awards. His exceptional talent has also been honored multiple times in the Creative Review Photography Annual. His impressive client roster includes renowned brands such as Adidas, Asahi, Biotherm, Chivas, Converse, Dom Pérignon, Issey Miyake, Glenmorangie, Lexus, Hennessy, Moncler, Nike, Rimowa, Rolex, Sony, Twin Magazine, and Wallpaper* Magazine. Ryan’s work has been showcased in notable exhibitions and installations, such as "Go-See" at Colette in Paris (Group), the Royal Salute installation for Chivas in collaboration with StudioTooGood, and the Sony Catwalk Sculpture for Christopher Raeburn's Spring/Summer 2014 collection in partnership with Hirsch & Mann. His contributions continue to resonate within the contemporary art landscape, inviting viewers to engage with the interplay of materiality and imagination.
