Ralph Gibson

Bio

Ralph Gibson is a renowned photographer who studied photography while in the US Navy and later at the San Francisco Art Institute. His professional journey began as an assistant to Dorothea Lange and continued working with Robert Frank on films. Gibson has a deep-seated passion for books and book-making, which has propelled his work towards the printed page since the release of 'The Somnambulist' in 1970. To date, he has produced over 40 monographs, with recent titles including 'State of the Axe' and 'NUDE'. His work is represented in more than 150 museum collections globally and has been showcased in numerous exhibitions. Over his illustrious career, he has received several prestigious awards, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and is a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. Gibson has exclusively used Leica cameras for nearly half a century.
