Bio

**Visionary Artist, Cultural Historian, Icon of Glamour** Matthew Rolston is a distinguished artist whose innovative work in photography and video transcends mere portraiture, delving deeply into the heart of celebrity culture. Based in Los Angeles, Rolston’s artistic journey began with a foundation in drawing and painting at the esteemed Chouinard Art Institute and Otis College of Art & Design, further enriched by his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. His pursuit of knowledge continued at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he explored illustration, photography, imaging, and film, culminating in him receiving an Honorary Doctorate in 2006. Rolston's remarkable career took flight while he was still a student. He was 'discovered' by the legendary Andy Warhol, who commissioned him to create portraits for Interview magazine, marking the inception of a prolific artistic trajectory. Over the past three decades, his evocative photographs have graced the pages of prestigious publications including Vogue, W, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, and over 100 covers of Rolling Stone. A key figure among the influential photographers who emerged from the vibrant 1980s magazine scene, Rolston shared camaraderie with luminaries such as Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz, and Steven Meisel. His signature style—characterized by glamorous lighting, surrealistic tableaux, and intricately detailed sets—has played a pivotal role in shaping the contemporary aesthetic of American portrait photography, capturing the essence of modern glamour. Rolston's artistic legacy is preserved in his published collections, including *Hollywood Royale*, *Art People*, *Talking Heads*, and *beautyLIGHT*. His recent exhibitions, such as *Art People: The Pageant Portraits* at Laguna Art Museum, *Hollywood Babylon* at Nicodim Gallery, and *Hollywood Royale* at Fahey/Klein Gallery, showcase his ongoing commitment to exploring the interplay between art and culture. Through his lens, Matthew Rolston continues to redefine the boundaries of portraiture, inviting audiences to engage with the multifaceted narratives of celebrity and identity.
