Bio
"Bolade Banjo, a distinguished British photographer and filmmaker, draws profound inspiration from the groundbreaking legacies of Gordon Parks and Susan Meiselas, recognizing their ability to forge unique paths in visual storytelling over the last 75 years. His journey into the world of image-making began in childhood, influenced by his maternal aunt, the family’s unofficial photographer. This early exposure ignited Banjo’s passion for capturing and celebrating the essence of human life. As a teenager, Banjo’s fascination with visual media took flight through short films, where he began to appreciate photography as a vital reference for cinematographic practices. A natural researcher, he continually broadens his horizons, from his extensive knowledge of independent British magazine culture to exploring the dynamic interplay between photography and music, nurturing ideas that resonate across disciplines. Banjo's intricate grasp of photography's evolving landscape is enhanced by his deep understanding of analog darkroom processes—an alchemical approach that informs his artistic vision. From lens selection to lighting design, his curiosity fuels a creative process that embraces experimentation. On set, he adeptly employs multiple cameras, responding in real time to the nuances of each photographic scenario. His diverse body of work, while taking viewers on multifaceted journeys, consistently embodies a spirit of innovation that transcends traditional boundaries. His editorial contributions have graced the pages of renowned publications such as The Face, i-D Magazine, Dazed, The Gentlewoman, More or Less, Arena Homme +, and WSJ Magazine. Banjo's commercial partnerships include notable brands like Burberry, Supreme, Gucci, F1, Marc Jacobs, NIKE, Nicholas Daley, Mount Kimbie, Palace/Y3, and Drake. In 2017, he published his debut book, *They Think Brighter than You Shine*, a visual narrative exploring the vibrant culture of Detroit in collaboration with house musician John FM and jazz artist Nolan Young. Spanning photography, film, and multimedia, Banjo’s practice harnesses analog techniques to delve into the physicality of image-making through color, collage, and expansive tonal ranges. His work, which encompasses reportage, fashion, and portraiture, serves as a platform for engaging with an ever-evolving subject matter. Through these innovative techniques and compelling narratives, Banjo is redefining emerging photography, showcasing his art at esteemed venues such as VA Dundee, Now Gallery, and the Saatchi Gallery."
