Bio
Asger Carlsen's artistic journey commenced in the realms of photojournalism and crime scene photography, where he honed his skills in capturing stark realities. However, Carlsen soon pivoted from straightforward representation to explore the complexities of visual perception. Unlike many artists who rely solely on photography, he employs a multifaceted approach that begins with capturing his subjects from various angles. This initial phase yields hundreds of images, which he meticulously deconstructs and transforms on a digital platform through strategic cropping and layering. The result is a striking body of work that transcends traditional photography, inviting viewers to engage with pristine imagery that challenges the very essence of the medium. Carlsen’s explorations in portraiture, fashion, and allegorical themes reimagine the human form in ways that elicit visceral, often unsettling responses. Born in Denmark and now residing in New York since 2007, Carlsen has made a significant impact on the contemporary art scene. His work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions across the globe, alongside notable solo presentations at prestigious venues such as The Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, Dittrich & Schlechtriem in Berlin, and Ruttkowski 68 in Cologne. Through his innovative practice, Carlsen not only expands the boundaries of photography but also invites a deeper dialogue about the nature of representation in art.
