Family Portrait is a documentary-style editorial series by photographer Mel Bles that explores themes of connection, domesticity, and youth. The work relies on a grainy, analogue film aesthetic to capture intimate, candid interactions between subjects in outdoor settings, shifting between sun-drenched grassy meadows and stark monochrome studio environments. Bles utilises natural lighting to highlight textures—from denim and floral accents to layered casual apparel—while integrating graphic typography and layered compositions to anchor the series in a modern editorial context. The project oscillates between tight portraiture and environmental scenes, offering a raw, nostalgic look at the subjects through deliberate diptych layouts and contrasting monochrome and warm color palettes.
