Bio
Yoshihiro Makino, born and raised in the vibrant metropolis of Tokyo, is a photographer whose artistic vision is deeply rooted in the interplay of urban culture and design. His work reflects a profound fascination with the cultural exchanges that shape architectural narratives, particularly the enduring dialogue between Japan and the wider world. Makino draws inspiration from iconic architects of the early twentieth century, such as Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright, whose innovative designs were notably influenced by Japanese aesthetics. This cultural reciprocity not only enriched modern Japanese architecture but also fostered a global appreciation for its elegance and simplicity. One of Makino's significant projects centers on the life and work of Antonin Raymond, a pivotal figure who dedicated much of his career to Japan. Through his exploration of Raymond's Japan-style farmhouse in Pennsylvania, influenced by Wright's vision, Makino highlights the intricate connections that define architectural history. His recently published book, *The Open Hand: Le Corbusier’s Chandigarh*, is a compelling photographic essay that delves into the modernist architect's Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, India—a landmark of 20th-century architecture. This work exemplifies Makino's talent for capturing the essence of spaces and their cultural significance. In addition to his book, Makino's creative collaborations have included a recent partnership with Cereal Magazine, showcasing his unique perspective on design and space. He has also worked with Ace Hotel Kyoto and Commune Design, where he documented the hotel’s inaugural location in Kyoto, highlighting its thoughtfully curated interiors. Now based in Los Angeles, Makino's photographic journeys take him across the globe, where he crafts captivating images of interiors and portraits for a diverse clientele, spanning editorial, private, and commercial sectors. Through his lens, he continues to explore and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultural influences that shape our built environment.
