Bio

Mark Williams and Sara Hirakawa are a dynamic husband-and-wife duo whose collaborative artistry transcends traditional boundaries in photography. Their work, characterized by an ever-evolving aesthetic, reflects a harmonious blend of their distinct visions, driven by a shared commitment to serving the image above all else. When asked to define their photographic style, they playfully admit to a love for contrasts—bright and colorful yet drawn to the allure of dark and muted tones. Their portfolio captures a wide emotional range, from youthful exuberance to contemplative seriousness, always with a keen eye for detail and a genuine appreciation for the moment. This fluidity keeps their work fresh and engaging, eschewing monotony in favor of exploration. Mark and Sara’s journey began during their college years, where they first connected while collaborating on a photography project. Their relationship blossomed alongside their artistic pursuits, and their shared passion for visual storytelling has only deepened since they tied the knot in 2003. Despite the countless hours spent together, they have managed to maintain a vibrant partnership, both personally and professionally. Sara’s artistic roots trace back to her childhood in the Bronx, where her father nurtured her early interest in painting. By the time she was in fifth grade, she was studying at the prestigious Arts Students’ League in New York, where she first encountered the challenge of drawing nude models. Her fascination with photography emerged during high school, opening up a new world of creative possibilities. Mark, the youngest of four siblings, always felt drawn to a visual career but struggled to find his niche until he discovered photography in college. His serendipitous encounter with Sara in their introductory photo class set the stage for a creative partnership that would flourish over the years. After graduation, the couple moved to New York, pursuing individual careers while honing their craft. Mark assisted established photographers, while Sara managed studios, all the while developing their portfolios. Over time, their artistic sensibilities began to merge, culminating in a decision to collaborate full-time. In search of new opportunities, the couple relocated to Los Angeles after their wedding, where they quickly established themselves in the industry. Their impressive client roster includes renowned names such as Neiman Marcus, Target, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Vogue Japan, and Capitol Records. They continue to thrive in their artistic endeavors, now residing in California with their son, Eli. When reflecting on their journey as photographers, Mark and Sara believe that true artistry is innate—either you possess it, or you don’t. For them, photography is not just a career; it is an essential part of their identity. While they occasionally ponder alternate paths—Mark in music and Sara in painting or fashion design—they feel an undeniable connection to photography that they wouldn’t trade for anything. Their dream clients are those who resonate with their vision, and they find fulfillment in every project that allows them to express their creativity. Family, friends, and the simple joys of life—like a cozy fireplace, vinyl records, and a love for rice—are what they cherish most. Above all, they value authenticity and are driven by a commitment to walk the walk in both their personal and professional lives.
