Bio
Wes Lang (b. 1972, USA) is a provocative contemporary artist whose work challenges and reinterprets the narratives of American history. Through a dynamic fusion of frenetic drawings, sculptures, and paintings, Lang engages with controversial imagery—ranging from depictions of Native Americans to the confederate flag and blackface minstrelsy. He articulates his unique approach by stating, “I like to take American history and then completely ignore it. I come at it visually, taking images and telling my own story. It comes out of criticism and great love.” Lang’s process is rooted in his autodidactic journey, having honed his skills through art handling at the Guggenheim Museum, where he developed a keen understanding of artistic expression. Born in Chatham, New Jersey, and now based in Brooklyn, New York, he is drawn to the complexities and darker aspects of American culture, aiming to spark dialogue and reflection through his work. His artistic contributions gained significant attention in 2013 when he collaborated with Kanye West, propelling him into the realm of popular culture. Lang’s work has been regularly showcased at Zieher Smith & Horton gallery in New York, where he continues to captivate audiences with his incisive storytelling and bold visual language.
