Bio

Mark Summers is a celebrated illustrator whose artistic journey began at the Ontario College of Art, from which he graduated in 1978. With a career spanning over 35 years, Summers has dedicated himself to the intricate art of scratchboard—a once-popular medium that had nearly faded into obscurity by the mid-1970s. Renowned author and illustration historian Steven Heller recognizes Summers as a pivotal figure in reviving this technique, breathing new life into its expressive potential. Summers initially made his mark in the newspaper industry, providing illustrations for prestigious publications such as The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. His versatility soon led him beyond newspapers, allowing him to contribute to a myriad of magazines, including Rolling Stone, Newsweek, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and Sports Illustrated. Notably, he has created numerous iconic covers for Time magazine and has penned and illustrated engaging articles for Vanity Fair. His impressive portfolio also includes collaborations with literary giants like James Michener and Isaac Asimov, as well as lavishly illustrated editions of classic works by Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, Herman Melville’s "Moby Dick," and Jonathan Swift’s "Gulliver’s Travels." In addition to these collaborations, Summers has authored and illustrated two of his own books. Summers’ artistic prowess extends to the design and publication of 16 stamps for the United States Postal Service, as well as for The Royal Mail and Canada Post. Perhaps most notably, he spent a decade crafting the visual identity of Barnes & Noble, where his portraits of celebrated authors graced the walls of their stores, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for book lovers. His contributions to the field have not gone unnoticed; Summers has garnered six prestigious medals from the Society of Illustrators in New York, alongside the Hamilton King Award for best illustration in 2000. To date, he has amassed over 350 awards both nationally and internationally, reflecting the vast reach and impact of his work. His impressive client roster includes renowned names such as Ford Motor Company, Pacific Bell, and Seagrams, with projects extending as far as Dubai and China. Residing in Waterdown, Ontario, Canada, Mark Summers shares his life with his wife and daughter, continuing to inspire and captivate audiences with his extraordinary artistic vision.
