Based in the vibrant city of Chicago, Lawrence Agyei (b. 1990) is an innovative visual storyteller whose work reflects the rich tapestry of his cross-continental upbringing. As a third culture child, Agyei's multifaceted identity informs his artistic vision, exploring themes of multiculturalism that celebrate the interplay between his Ghanaian heritage, Italian roots, and experiences in the American Midwest. Agyei's photography is a powerful fusion of documentary and portraiture, infused with elements of fashion that elevate the representation of Black culture and its inherent beauty. Through his compelling visual essays, he provides an authentic exploration of cultural identity, capturing the resilience and spirit of the human experience. His artistic contributions have garnered attention from prestigious companies and publications, including Apple, Nordstrom, Teen Vogue, Adobe, Vanity Fair, Studio Magazine, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. Notably, his work was featured in the internationally acclaimed exhibition, The New Black Vanguard, curated by Antwaun Sargent, and he has participated in exhibitions such as The Promised Land at the South Side Community Art Center and Creator Labs by Google. Agyei's impact extends beyond his artwork; he has been recognized by media outlets like i-D and Soho Magazine and has shared his insights on panels at Apple and the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. In 2020, he was celebrated as one of "30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch" by i-D, and in 2022, he received the Booooooom Photo Book Award for his captivating photo series, DRILL.
