Kourtney Roy
Bio
Kourtney Roy is a dynamic force in contemporary photography and filmmaking, whose artistic journey began with her studies at the esteemed Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, followed by a transformative experience at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This educational foundation has shaped her distinctive aesthetic—characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and a vibrant color palette that thrives on both glossy prints and cinematic narratives. As an independent artist, Roy seamlessly blends her work between the realms of fine art and commercial advertising, crafting visually striking pieces that often reveal the underlying tensions of everyday life. Her unique perspective, infused with a dark sense of humor, draws inspiration from the grotesque elements lurking beneath seemingly tranquil settings. This compelling approach has earned her numerous accolades, including the Prix Picto in 2007, the Emily Award from ECUAD in 2012, and the prestigious Prix Carte Blanche PMU/Le Bal in 2013. In 2018, she received the esteemed Carte Blanche from Pernod Ricard, as well as a grant from the French National Center of the Arts. More recently, in 2022, she was commissioned by the National Library of France for a photographic project. In 2023, Roy’s photo book, *THE OTHER END OF THE RAINBOW*, was celebrated with the Prix des Libraires for photo book of the year in France and the Prix Swiss Life. Her cinematic ventures have also garnered recognition; her short film *MORNING, VEGAS* won Best Experimental Film at the Brest European Short Film Festival in 2019, and her second short, *SLICE OF HEAVEN*, premiered at the 2020 Raindance Film Festival in London. Roy's debut feature film, *KRYPTIC*, a genre-defying exploration of time and identity, debuted to acclaim at the 2024 SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. Kourtney Roy’s artistic vision has captured the attention of major clients such as Credit Suisse, Diesel, Dior, Galleries Lafayette, Louis Vuitton, Pernod Ricard, and Volkswagen, as well as prestigious publications including Vogue, Numéro, Madame Figaro, The Sunday Times, GQ, L’Officiel, and Esquire. Her work continues to push boundaries, inviting viewers to explore the complex interplay of beauty and darkness in the world around us.
