Bio
Kenji Aoki’s artistic journey began under the tutelage of his uncle, renowned craft designer Mosuke Yoshitake, where he first explored the intricate world of drawing. His formal education at Kuwasawa Design School introduced him to the transformative Bauhaus design philosophy, as well as the groundbreaking concepts of Kazimir Malevich's "The Non-Objective World." Inspired by the notion of “Zero” and the Zen ideals of “no object,” Kenji embarked on a quest to uncover the essence of the non-object through the lens of photography. Since 1991, Kenji has made a significant impact as a still-life photographer, celebrated for his distinctive blend of delicacy and strength, coupled with a unique color palette and minimalist approach. His work has garnered widespread acclaim within the industry, leading to a collaboration with New York-based photography agent Michel Ash in 2008. This partnership prompted his relocation to New York in 2010, where Kenji's artistry flourished. In the vibrant cultural landscape of New York, he has contributed his visual storytelling skills to prestigious publications, including The New York Times Magazine and TIME. His work has not only been featured but also recognized in esteemed collections such as "The New York Times Magazine Photographs," edited by Kathy Ryan, and American Photography. Kenji Aoki continues to push the boundaries of still-life photography, inviting viewers to engage in a dialogue with the unseen.
