Bio

Katerina Jebb, born in England in 1962, is a pioneering artist renowned for her innovative approach to photography. In 1984, she embarked on a transformative journey to California, where she honed her craft in photography. Early in her career, Jebb captivated audiences with her unique photomontages, skillfully produced within the camera through multiple exposures of a single roll of film. In 1989, Jebb made a significant move to Paris, immersing herself in the world of experimental photography. It was here that she pushed the boundaries of traditional techniques, utilizing high-resolution photocopy machines to create life-size images, primarily self-portraits. By positioning herself on a scanning machine, she explored the interplay between the body and technology, often removing parts of the scanner to extend the subject's representation. This process required extraordinary patience, with the long exposures—sometimes lasting up to seven minutes—demanding that she remain motionless for a total of twenty-eight minutes. Her groundbreaking work soon garnered international acclaim, with her images recognized as a new visual medium. Notably, Jebb's art was featured in the 1998 world-touring retrospective "The Warhol Look" at The Whitney Museum, solidifying her place in contemporary art. In 2016, Jebb's innovative vision was showcased in a solo exhibition at Musée Réattu in Arles, Paris, further establishing her reputation. Two years later, she received a prestigious commission from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, collaborating on the acclaimed exhibition "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination." March 2021 marked another milestone with the unveiling of a large-scale installation in the Sculpture Galleries of the Victoria and Albert Museum, a testament to her ongoing evolution as an artist. Katerina Jebb's work is proudly included in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and Musée Réattu in Arles. Looking ahead, Jebb is set to unveil a series of new works at the National Museum of Rome in May 2023, promising to inspire and engage audiences with her distinctive artistic voice.
