Born and raised in the vibrant community of Lawrence, Kansas, Johnny has cultivated a distinctive voice in the world of photography. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the esteemed Parsons School of Design in 1997, where he honed his artistic vision and technical skills. Following his graduation, Johnny had the privilege of assisting renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark for three formative years, an experience that deeply influenced his creative trajectory. From 2006 to 2012, he served as a staff photographer for Martha Stewart, where his work showcased the intersection of artistry and lifestyle, capturing the essence of culinary and domestic beauty. His photography has garnered attention and acclaim, with exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the New York Historical Society, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of the City of New York. Johnny’s work is proudly featured in the permanent collections of esteemed institutions, including the George Eastman Museum, the Library of Congress, and the New York Historical Society. He is also a co-author of "Coney Island," published by Trans Photographic Press in Paris in 2010, which further highlights his dedication to storytelling through imagery. His talent has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the 2020 Best Photograph award at the Guild Hall East Hampton Artist Member Show and the 2018 James Beard Award for photography for the book "Cook Beautiful." Johnny continues to push the boundaries of photographic art, captivating audiences with his unique perspective and commitment to his craft.
