Born in Karlstad, Sweden, JH Engström is a distinguished artist whose two-decade-long practice challenges the intricacies of human existence through immersive installations that blend photography, film, and literature. With a profound autobiographical lens, his work reflects the journey of an artist constantly in motion, having resided in Sweden, the United States, and Paris. Engström’s explorations delve into the nuances of personal memory, our connections to our origins, and the intricate interplay between urban and natural landscapes, all while scrutinizing contemporary modes of representation and power dynamics. Engström’s captivating oeuvre has been showcased in numerous prestigious solo exhibitions, including those at the Värmlands Museum in Sweden (2017 and 2009), FOAM Amsterdam (2014), the National Media Museum in Bradford, UK (2010), and the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg (2005). His work is included in esteemed collections such as the Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the Musée Nicéphore Niépce in Paris.
