Jean Mallard, born in Paris in 1997, is a vibrant and innovative artist whose work draws inspiration from the fantastical realms of Moebius's comics and the enchanting worlds of Miyazaki's films. In 2015, he embarked on his artistic journey at the École des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, where he honed his skills in comic art, animation, screen printing, and engraving. Mallard’s artistic practice is characterized by his masterful use of watercolor and gouache, techniques that allow him to conjure infinite worlds filled with exuberance, humor, and poetic depth. His creative vision is a rich tapestry woven from influences as diverse as Russian folk painters, Indian miniatures, Japanese prints, and the whimsical works of Henri Rousseau. His talent has garnered recognition in the art world, with his illustrations being selected for prestigious events such as the Bologna Children's Book Fair in 2018 and 2020 and the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2019, where he was honored with the Grand Award. In 2019, Mallard relocated to Naples, where he showcased his first solo exhibition, "Via Miracoli," at the SLOW Gallery the following year. His artistic journey continued with remarkable success in 2022, culminating in his second exhibition, "L’heure bleue," in Sicily, where his work resonated deeply with audiences.
