Janelle Jones
Bio
Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, photographer and filmmaker Janelle Jones combines her fine art training with a deep understanding of semiotics—the study of how meaning is constructed and interpreted through visual and verbal cues. From an early age, Janelle embraced her identity as a creator and collector, transforming found materials into innovative expressions of her artistic vision. Now based in Brooklyn, Janelle crafts captivating still life, dance, and portraiture images for prestigious editorial clients and brands. Her work is characterized by a meticulous balance of analytical precision and creative intuition, as she navigates the dual roles of director and creator. Whether capturing stills or motion, she remains acutely aware of the underlying narratives that breathe life into her images. Janelle draws inspiration from a diverse array of influences, ranging from the avant-garde Surrealist movement to the whimsical humor of Gene Wilder. Her distinctive aesthetic frequently challenges conventional perceptions of reality, creating what she describes as a “bendy reality.” With a penchant for anthropomorphism and an appreciation for voluptuous forms—shaped by her background in dance—Janelle approaches each project with openness, patience, and an experimental spirit, inviting viewers to engage with her work on multiple levels.
