Bio
Genevieve Gaignard is a dynamic Los Angeles-based artist whose multifaceted practice encompasses installation, sculpture, and photographic self-portraiture. Through her work, Gaignard delves into the intricate themes of race, femininity, and class, offering a profound commentary on the cultural and aesthetic divides that shape American society. As a biracial woman, she navigates the complex terrain of identity, illuminating the often “invisible” chasm between black and white experiences. Gaignard’s art interrogates the concept of “passing,” utilizing her own body as a canvas to challenge viewers to confront the tensions and nuances of intersectional identity. Her thought-provoking installations invite audiences to engage with the intricate layers of power and anxiety that accompany such identities, prompting a deeper reflection on societal perceptions. Her work has garnered significant recognition and has been showcased in prestigious solo and group exhibitions, including The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., Crystal Bridges Museum of Art in Arkansas, The Studio Museum in Harlem, the California African American Museum, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, and Prospect.4 in New Orleans. Gaignard holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and earned her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Yale University.
