Gaysorn Thavat
Bio
Gaysorn Thavat is a NZ Chinese, multi-hyphenate creative working across film, television and advertising. In her dramatic work, Gaysorn’s strength is in performance, where she works collaboratively with actors to achieve authentic characters and compelling performances. Her debut feature ‘The Justice of Bunny King’ starring Essie Davis and Thomasin McKenzie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021, where Gaysorn was nominated for the Nora Ephron Award, and her two leads picked up accolades for their powerful performances. It was released theatrically in North America in 2022 to positive reviews, with a 95% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Gaysorn’s commercial work across the Australasian and US markets has seen her directing TVC campaigns for Disney, Nokia, JC Penney, Indeed, Holden, Westpac, Toronto Bank to name a few. Having begun her career in the camera department, Gaysorn combines her visual aesthetic with her storytelling skills to create highly original campaigns, often with a flair for VFX. In 2009 she picked up a Gold Film Lion at Cannes for her Breast Cancer Research TVC. Gaysorn has directed television for Warner Brothers NZ, as well as episodes of the ‘NZ Noir’ drama series ‘The Gulf’ for Screentime and is a member of the DGA, DEGANZ (Directors and Editors Guild of Aotearoa NZ) and PASC (Pan Asian Screen Collective).
