Delali Ayivi
Bio
Delali is a dynamic Togolese and German photographer renowned for her commitment to presenting diverse and authentic representations of Black communities. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised in Germany, Delali's multicultural background profoundly influences her artistic vision. Her journey into photography began with intimate portraits of friends and family across Germany, Togo, and Malawi, capturing the essence of their lives and cultures. Delali's exploration of her heritage took a pivotal turn when she discovered the legacy of her great-great-grandfather, Alex A. Acolatse, one of Togo's pioneering photographers. Inspired by his groundbreaking work, she has dedicated herself to documenting contemporary narratives with a particular emphasis on fashion and identity. In 2019, Delali launched “togo Yeye,” an innovative project aimed at scouting and showcasing exceptional Togolese talent. This initiative not only seeks to empower the Togolese creative community but also aims to document its vibrant artistic landscape. “togo Yeye” has garnered international recognition, being featured at the prestigious Photo Vogue Festival in 2021 and winning the pH Museum New Generation Prize in 2022. In February 2022, the project culminated in a solo exhibition commissioned by the Palais de Lomé, further solidifying Delali's role as a vital voice in contemporary photography. Her recent series, “Heimat (In Quarantine)” and “Reflections on ‘Heimat,’” have earned her acclaim, including the Foam Talent title in 2021 and a shortlist nomination for the Taylor Wessing National Portrait Gallery Prize. Through her lens, Delali continues to challenge narratives and celebrate the richness of identity, making her an influential force in the world of photography.
