Cristina Velasquez
Bio
Cristina Velásquez is a visionary artist whose creative practice intricately weaves together photography and textile art. Based in Colombia, her work delves deep into the postcolonial dynamics of power that shape Latin America, exploring themes of race, class, and the complexities of labor distribution. Velásquez is particularly fascinated by the ways in which cultures interact and translate one another, highlighting the often insidious ways in which dominant cultures can sanitize and diminish the narratives of marginalized communities—a legacy she passionately seeks to challenge and transform. Her most recent accolades include participation in Regeneration 4 at the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne (2020), the prestigious Light Work Artist-in-Residence program (2019), and recognition through the Carol Crow Fellowship (2019) and the Kris Graves Project’s Lost II Book Prize (2019). Velásquez's compelling work has been exhibited in prominent venues such as the Musée de l’Elysée, the International Center of Photography, ArtBo, MoMA PS1, and the Houston Center for Photography. Her art is also featured in numerous private and public collections, affirming her significant impact on contemporary discourse surrounding identity and power in the postcolonial context.
