Callum Smith
Bio
Callum Smith is an editorial photographer who uses his photography as a medium to document and examine British heritage and the surrounding culture that he grew up in - his work is predominantly interested in masculinity with respect to this topic. Smith pays close attention to the study of human behaviour and the perspectives of his subjects - educating himself and his audience to better understand their experiences and viewpoints. Smith’s work invites people to reflect on themselves, their own thoughts and beliefs. This is often done through the use of humour and satirization in his photographs - used to take the solemnity away and creating a space for the audience to open up and ask questions of their own understanding of the subject matter. Smith’s most recent work ‘What is Lost’ addresses toxic masculinity in British culture, exploring themes of phototherapy while documenting the social issue - capturing men in British culture who haven’t felt like they have been able to show affection towards each other and providing a safe environment for them to do so - recording the process in an ethnographic manner.
