Bio
Alessandra Sanguinetti, born in New York and raised in the vibrant landscapes of Argentina, is a distinguished photographer renowned for her deeply personal and evocative storytelling. In the late 1990s, she embarked on a remarkable long-term collaboration with her cousins, Belinda and Guille, as she began to capture their intricate relationship on a farm near Buenos Aires. This endeavor culminated in her critically acclaimed work, *The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of their Dreams*, a poignant exploration of intimacy, imagination, and the transformative journey from childhood to adulthood. Through a unique blend of staged performances and candid observations, Sanguinetti weaves a rich narrative that reflects the challenges, rites of passage, and the profound connections that shape our lives. In 2020, she continued this intimate exploration with *The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer*, published by Mac Books, revisiting the rural heart of Argentina to further document the evolving bond between Belinda and Guillermina. Sanguinetti's body of work extends beyond this series, showcasing her ability to delve into diverse themes. Her project *On the Sixth Day* (2006) is an eight-year meditation on the intricate relationships between humans and domesticated animals, highlighting the complexities and contradictions inherent in these connections. In *Sorry, Welcome* (2013), she offers an intimate glimpse into her own family dynamics, while *Black River Falls* (2014) transports viewers to Wisconsin, where Sanguinetti photographs small-town life through the lens of Michael Lesy’s seminal work, *Wisconsin Death Trip* (1973)—an exploration that has profoundly shaped her understanding of the power of imagery since childhood. Her journey through Paris in *Le Gendarme Sur La Colline* (2017) further expands her narrative scope, as she examines the multifaceted notions of French identity and tradition across both rural and urban landscapes. A member of the prestigious Magnum Photos, Sanguinetti has been recognized with numerous accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2008), a MacDowell Fellowship (2007), and a Hasselblad Foundation Grant (2001). Her work is held in esteemed museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. With each project, Sanguinetti continues to captivate audiences, inviting them to engage with the profound narratives that define human experience.
