About

This digital illustration by Meryl Rowin depicts Shirley Chisholm, the first African American congresswoman. The portrait features Chisholm with voluminous dark purple hair, gold-rimmed glasses, and a blue collared garment adorned with white stars, while she holds up two fingers in a peace sign. Her name and title are hand-lettered on the right side in white script against a textured monochromatic purple background. The visible brushstrokes and chalky textures give the piece a hand-drawn feel, with rich shading defining her facial features and expression.
